Choosing the best assisted living
It is so hard as you are touring the assisted living homes and facilities out there, how do you know who has the best care. The best indicator is cleanliness and smell. It is nice to live in a home that is clean and smells good, but these are indicators of so much more. If a home is not clean, then that indicates so much more about the care provided for the residents. If there is not an eye for details with a home why would it be different for a person?
Most importantly is smell! Most people think that it is common that elderly people have a smell, or if they are having accidents they you can’t help there being an odor. I even think my memories of my own grandmother were that there was a smell in her home, but that was only because she wasn’t able to care for herself properly. Good caregivers have a home that doesn’t smell period! They are changing the residents frequently, helping residents to the toilet, and keeping up on the laundry.
This would also indicate the home is sufficiently staffed, having enough caregivers for the residents. You can’t control is someone has a bowel movement and is changed right away, that happens. However, it is possible and make it a requirement that wherever you are placing your loved one does not smell of urine. There may be may other indicators or preferences you are looking for such as price, activities, food, size etc. The one thing that everyone needs is great care so when you are looking for a home with great care always follow your nose.
