Choosing an assisted living home can be overwhelming. It is so important, and so difficult to see what it is you may not see. So what is it that matters, and what are the signs to look for?
Well first is trust you nose! It is common to think elderly facilities have a smell, but that is only the ones that don’t have the best care. So just know if there is a smell, there are not enough caregivers, not experienced caregivers or they are just not doing their job. I know my grandmother had a smell in her home, but she wasn’t able to care for herself properly. You are paying for care, make sure you are getting good care and smell is the best indicator.
Check the move-out policy. First if you are locked into a long term contract why would that be? Why would you want to leave if they are doing a good job once you are there? The move out policy should be less than 30 day notice. That says they are confident in the service they provide. Ultimately if for any reason someone is not happy it should be easy to move, that shows they care more about the resident than the money.
The other thing you want to know about the policy is the level of care provided and if a resident would need to move out because their condition has worsened. The nature of aging is we will deteriorate and need more assistance. If the care home can only provide for them as they are now, then you will have to do this all over again as need more assistance. You want to make sure they won’t increase or discharge over memory care which will be much more expensive. Or if incontinence of bowel or bladder comes into play. What if walking with a walker leads to wheelchair, is that assistance available?
